Top Scientific Visualization Research Problems
The Top Scientific Visualization Research Problems list has been compiled by Chris Johnson – University of Utah and published in IEEE CG&A July/August 2004 p. 13-17.
Hopefully this list here will motivate me to collect possible research themes for my work acting as a spark plug for new ideas.
1.Think about the science
OK, accepted. Now I’m concentrating on how a chemists work, their usual problems that visualization can help solving.
2.Quantify effectiveness
TBD
3.Represent errors and uncertainty
It is something absolutely ignored in chemistry visualization. I’ll need to learn how is uncertainly recorded in chemistry data.
4.Perceptual issues
At least I’m thinking about this point.
5.Efficiently utilizing novel hardware architectures
TBD
6.Human-computer interaction
TBD
7.Global/local visualization (details within context)
TBD
8.Integrated problem-solving environments
TBD
9.Multifield visualization
TBD
10.Integrating scientific and information visualization
TBD
11.Feature detection
TBD
12.Time-dependent visualization
TBD
13.Scalable, distributed, and grid-based visualization
TBD
14.Visual abstractions
TBD
15.Theory of visualization
TBD
